Thursday's Class 5/30

For Thursday's class we went through all of the 7th kyu requirements with a focus on higher level Tai Sabaki and knife use and disarms. Some drills using sword and hanbo were introduced to help improve upper and lower body integration. Then we ended the evening going through three Takagi Yoshin Ryu Waza.

Tuesday's Class 5/28

For Tuesday's class we looked at the San Shin elements and applied them to Tai Sabaki. This then morphed to using Uke Nagashi and Tai Sabaki against knife attacks, including knife on knife, and knife versus unarmed.

Tuesday's Class 5/14

For Tuesday's class we started out working on shuriken throwing, both bo shuriken and senban shuriken. Then we moved onto working on kihon happo development and using it more realistically. Uke continued the attacks and also responded to attacks by the Tori. Some high principles were shared as part of this training and it seemed to resonate with everyone in class.

Great Article

If you have the time, please read this great article Banpen Fugyoon and think of how this relates to our training in the dojo and how to apply it yourself. http://bujinkansantamonica.blogspot.com/2011/08/banpen-fugyo-emptiness-in-midst-of.html

Thursday's Class 5/9

Thursday's class was a lot of fun and very exciting. We focused largely on Kihon Happo for the evening, with a strong emphasis on how it is used in a more dynamic way. We ended this extensive practice by having some free form play with the Kihon Happo, where the uke was allowed, even encouraged, to attack with multiple attacks, punches or kicks, and to resist any grappling attempts with the Kihon Happo. The only real rule was for the Tori to keep to the Kihon Happo and move using the Kamae.

Tuesday's Class

Tuesday night in the adult's class, we started off with the Kamae Kata, holding each kamae deeply for extended periods of time. Then we performed the Sanshin as a solo kata, then looked at the movements of each kata in reference to using a Tachi, then partnered up and played with each kata in various, adapted ways. This culminated with a more free form practice, using the San Shin to adapt to the uke's changes as the uke was allowed to respond defensively to the tori's attacks. Then we did some Takagi Yoshin Ryu Jutaijutsu (jujutsu) and looked at the "why?" behind one of the waza to lead to the "how."

If you don't like pain, don't do martial arts!
- Masaaki Hatsumi

Haha, this is pretty true, particularly in the adults class. However, in the kids class we try to avoid pain because that is not the focus of the class, the moto is to keep kids safe. Sure, pain from push ups or lunges or squats, or from learning to roll on the ground. But not from getting punched or kicked. In the adults class, we need to learn to deal with realistic attacks. In the kids class the primary focus is skills and abilities development.

Thursday's Class 5/1/14

Thursday's class was rather small, so we focused on 7th kyu requirements as that was the next level for those who attended. We reviewed all the Kata, Waza, Taihenjutsu, Dakentaijutsu, etc. for this level. Then we studied the Takagi Waza of Do Gaeshi both kneeling and standing, Kata Mune Dori, and Ryu Mune Dori. I showed where the bodyguard aspect of Takagi Yoshin Ryu come into play and how they effect the nature of the waza. This was a real eye opener and one student said that this one piece of advice made a huge difference in the way he perceived and understood the waza.
